A Night for Christy (2013)
Tribute concert at The Olympia Theatre, Dublin
On 21 June 2013, Dublin’s Olympia Theatre hosted A Night for Christy, a sold-out tribute concert in support of Aslan frontman Christy Dignam, who was undergoing cancer treatment at the time. The event brought together a diverse lineup of Irish musicians and artists, each performing selections from Aslan’s catalog.
Gavin Friday was among the performers, joining a bill that included Shane MacGowan, Paul Brady, Mary Black, members of Horslips, The Riptide Movement, Gavin James, and Jedward. U2 contributed a remote performance from a studio in New York, while Guggi served as the evening’s MC. Each artist chose a song from Aslan’s repertoire to perform, offering their interpretations in tribute to Dignam’s influence on the Irish music scene.
Gavin chose to perform Bowie’s 5 Years, a song which Aslan themselves have covered too.
The concert was streamed live to venues across Ireland and internationally, allowing fans unable to attend in person to participate in the celebration. Proceeds from the event were directed toward covering Dignam’s medical expenses.
